Pretty Lights
Thu, 2010-05-20
Actually I promised to myself not to post music that isn't CC licensed here. But Pretty Lights deserves to be an exception.
There are several albums available for download (NO CREATIVE COMMONS and on a flash page), and I can especially recommend the album "Passing By Behind Your Eyes".
It is an amazingly modern mix of different styles featuring beats that massage your stomach while tickling your ears. I love it.
Maybe you, too - and maybe one day those tracks will even be Creative Commons.
sigh
Humble Indie Bundle
Tue, 2010-05-11
That's right there is a Humble Indie Bundle (for GNU/linux, Mac and PC)!
Giving away money for games was never more fun: You pay as much as you like and support the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and Childsplay along with the game developers.
But there is more! After the first and very successful week Aquaria, Gish, Lugaru and Penumbra pledge to release their games as free software!
A great win to the free software world - maybe inspired by the recent move of Ryzom.
Can you imagine a better gift for a friend?
Linux Outlaws
Fri, 2010-04-09
Have you seen any of the faces above?
No? - Probably because you only heard their "oggcast" recently, and if you didn't maybe it is time to do so. Visit the Linux Outlaws homepage, or see them at their unconference "Oggcamp"!
The outlaws provide you with a weekly news flash about releases and any other kind of news in the FOSS world. And they don't seem to be too serious while they do so.
You should keep an eye on them ;)
Free vs. Open
Thu, 2010-02-04
You probably know about the ongoing debate of Free Software vs. Open Source. It clearly isn't a black-and-white debate, and some may even say they don't care what the difference is. But let me show you with a black-and-white example what the difference is, and why it matters:
Let's assume you are against slavery for obvious reasons, and there is a movement that clearly states it is "PRO black people".
Then there is a movement that states to be "PRO human rights" - not only including black people, but everybody. While both might fight for a same cause some just support certain behavior in certain cases while others care about the essential underlying reason.
In everyday life there might not be a big difference, but in the end of the day I would like to see Free Software to succeed. It really is something worth caring about.
Quicktorials.org
Thu, 2010-02-04
My new project Quicktorials.org is about to take off. It is a new system for free software video tutorials and currently needs some applications to implement it. Ricardo Lafuente recently worked on a new development version of Shoebot that integrates quicktorials even in a code editor! But that's not enough.
Please contact me if you're a developer and interested in adding this to any free software application! The easiest way is to send a jabber message to mray@jabber.org or contact me on identi.ca.
You can also send mail to "mail at mray.de".
